Wild Boar

With a keen sense of smell, and good hearing, the Wild Boar is a challenging animal to hunt. Spotting and foot stalking with rifle and bow are popular, as is the traditional Kiwi method of hunting using dogs and a knife, known as pig sticking.

Red Stag

Common throughout New Zealand, smaller in structure but related to Wapiti (Elk). Puts on an aggressive display during their rut and very vocal with a roar like call from late March to late April. Some males produce huge thick beams with many points, but a good stag could be anything over 12 points. Best hunted late February to August.

Thar

New Zealand’s largest alpine trophy, a broad shouldered, huge shaggy maned mountain goat with thick short horns. The striking appearance of the contrast in colour between the blond mane and black rear makes for an excellent life size mount. A tough animal surviving the harshest of alpine winters. Can be hunted all year.

Chamois

A fine featured nimble footed antelope with short vertical hooked horns. Has uncanny eyesight with a speedy retreat. Comes in two distinct colours, tan in summer and black in winter. Best hunted January to late August.

Wild Ram

There are two species of Wild Feral Ram (Ovis aries) in New Zealand. These are the Merino and the Arapawa. Both rams feature curling horns often with 1 ½-2 ½ curls on each side, forming elegant horns that make for excellent trophies.

Wild Goat

The Feral Goat (Capra hircus) is widespread throughout New Zealand and is a popular trophy for all hunters and a particular favourite with bow hunters as the inquisitive nature of the animal often brings it within comparatively close bow range.
